Belonging to the traditional heritage craft tradition of British Studio Pottery, Mr Hill is a proficient potter and ceramic artist, utilising the potter’s wheel for the production of the majority of his functional and decorative work. He believes strongly in practical, academic and historical exploration to the end of synthesising and sharing knowledge of his craft, particularly within shared creative spaces.
As a teacher, Mr Hill has previous experience in one-to-one peripatetic musical instrument teaching and has previously assisted in art classes for the residential music course ‘Superstrings’, involving teaching a range of creative techniques across an age-range of 4-16 years. He also has experience as a university student representative and in this role believed strongly in enabling each individual to realise their creative potential, helping others to approach creative tasks and challenges from different perspectives.
He believes that working with clay gives access to a unique form of creativity, connecting the maker to both contemporary art and historical craft traditions while also allowing the individual to access their inherent senses of tactile expression and exploration. It is in this that ceramics stands alone within the wider field of creative studies, serving both to deepen and enhance the artistic potential of the maker, while also developing their creative sensitivity, material intuition and academic rigour in the process.
In this class, Mr Hill will endeavour to creatively support and enable Ms Yuan and your children as she guides them through their first steps along their artistic journey with clay.
